"Attention staff and volunteers … Kody is going home."
With these simple few words, a disabled 8-year-old dachshund mix left the Humane Society of Vero Beach and Indian River County on Thursday for his new home with adopter Jana Hutchins of Sebastian.
Kody has no use of his hind legs and uses a “red racer” wheelchair to get around. He was turned in to the shelter in July when his previous owner could no long care for him, and has been up for adoption ever since.
Hutchins has been following Kody’s story on the Humane Society’s adoption website and recently saw him in a “pets for adoption” story in the newspaper. She called the shelter and asked to meet the special boy and introduce him to her other miniature dachshund named Gracey.
"This is a red-letter day," said Humane Society volunteer Sue Manganiello, who has been working with Kody since July. "This is a great Christmas present."
